  Underneath We Are

Body Loving Beach Party

2/4/2018
Picture
Ever wanted to go to the beach with a group of mates that you KNOW will make you feel great? That won’t make negative judgements? Do you wish you could just not give a damn about what others thought of you at the beach, just once! Me too. And I’ve gotten a lot better at it this summer.
Being able to wear what I want to wear, the bathers that make me feel good, sexy, confident, comfortable, is liberating! It seems like a small thing right? Going to the beach and wearing bathers or a bikini. Sure, to some it is small. And, to others it’s massive!! We all have a right to enjoy public spaces. And we ALL have a right to show skin in these public spaces.

People tell me that women gaining confidence to go to the beach in a bikini isn’t a big deal. But here’s the thing. You can’t tell others what does and does not constitute a notable achievement in THEIR lives. The smallest of achievements to you, may just be a life changing experience in another.
Picture
Marginalised women going to the beach, showing skin and being free from negative judgement actually IS a big deal. Particularly if you are a fat person showing skin. Or a disabled person showing skin. And especially, if their doing it with confidence! Certain bodies, particularly fat bodies, are highly policed by society. And when that person shows confidence, it seems to really threaten others comfort levels!

But covering YOUR body to suit someone else’s level of comfort, is not the change that’s needed. The change that’s needed, is within the other person;s mind and perceptions.

So, I wanted to create a space where we could all come together and just enjoy a day of sun, water, love, new friendships and solidarity.
